National Assembly passes law to set France on path to greenest EU nation by 2020
The French National Assembly in July adopted a new foundation text which brings into law environmental regulations drawn up in autumn 2007, known locally as `Grenelle de l'Environnement'. France has set the aim of becoming the most efficient economy in the Europe Union in carbon emissions by the year 2020. The main priority is to reduce energy consumption in the built environment, and principal measures include reinforcing norms on new construction, From 2010 all buildings in state sector ownership, and by 2012 all others, must cut average annual energy consumption to below 50 kWh sq.m. By 2020, it wants to achieve a 38% reduction in energy consumption across all buildings.
