Vienna starts Urban Lakeside to meet future housing needs
Vienna's Urban Lakeside is a massive new development on the Austrian capital's former airport, scheduled for completion in 2028. Authorities aim to create a city of the 21st century, offering 8,500 homes and 20,000 workplaces around a new lake. Nearly all cities at regular intervals face the challenge of re-using large former industrial areas for new urban developments. The ambitious Aspern-Vienna's Urban Lakeside, like Hamburg's HafenCity, Oslo's Fjord City or Frankfurt's Europa Viertel, demonstrates how such large-scale urban developments can be successfully realised step by step.
