Located at trans-European crossroads, Poland's Katowice region attracts investment
Katowice, located at the crossroads of trans-European routes linking Poland with Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany and Ukraine, is one of 14 cities forming the Metropolitan Association of Upper Silesia (GZM), and is strongly attracting investment. A metropolis with 2m population in the middle of a conurbation making up over 1,218 sq.km., GZM has one of the highest population densities in Europe. Since formation of the Silesian Voivodeship, or province, along Poland's historic lines in 1999, Katowice is transforming itself into a major metropolitan centre, close to Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Prague, Berlin and Warsaw. It also has rich reserves of coal, zinc, lead, methane, natural gas, marlstone and limestone and as a result has progressed into the coal and steel base of the region.
