Frankfurt Airport passenger, cargo volumes recover sharply
Passenger and freight levels through Frankfurt Airport recovered quite strongly in the first quarter following the sharp downturn last year due to the financial crisis. Passenger levels rose 3.9% against 1Q09 and were 8.3% up in March alone, while 1Q10 freight volumes climbed 33.5%. The data, which precede the flight disruptions from the Icelandic volcano eruption, provide an interesting micro-economic indicator of world trade health. Fraport is lobbying hard to increase business in Frankfurt, particularly in regard to its Airport City development, while IVG's Airrail Center will also benefit from growing use of the transport hub.
